The SBL Plugins Origin Story
SBL Plugins was created based on two ideas:
1. There was no perpetual-license talkback plugin on the market
My background as an audio engineer gave me the perspective to see this gap clearly. After more than 30 years working in audio post-production and sound design, I understood what engineers need in their daily tools. I knew what had worked before and why the existing options fell short.
2. Subscriptions suck
Go on Gearspace or KVR or VI-Control and you'll see a consistent theme: audio people don't like subscriptions (I mean, who does?). Whether it's called a "support plan" or "WUP" or whatever cutesy name it's marketed as, we hate 'em. We get that software companies need income to support development of new features, but we also don't feel we should have to pay for something we've already paid for.
When Apple's Silicon transition began in 2020, some plugins made the move to native Silicon support; others were left to the Unused Plugins folder of history. Engineers found themselves without reliable tools they'd come to depend on, forced to work around outdated solutions that no longer fit their setups. This wasn't abstract frustration. It was felt by a community of audio professionals who understood exactly what was missing and exactly what should replace it.
In April 2024, I decided to build the solution, and SBL Plugins was born. Our first release is Big Talk Button, a push-to-talk talkback plugin that gives recording engineers the straightforward, reliable communication tool they've been missing. No subscription required.
